Oslo University Hospital is owned by The South-Eastern Norway Regional Health Authority and consists of the previous University Hospital Trusts: Aker, Rikshospitalet and Ullevål.

Acute care and trauma centre
- Ullevål is the country's leading provider of treatment for severely injured patients
(trauma), and one of the largest in the field in northern Europe. Seriously injured patients from all over Norway's southeastern region are sent to Ullevål for treatment. The hospital also receives patients from other parts of the country.
A growing number of patients with extensive and severe injuries are sent to Ullevål for treatment. Each year the hospital receives some 1,300 patients with potentially serious injuries, of which around 500 prove to be severely injured.
The hospital has its own trauma unit. The trauma unit ensures that the most seriously injured patients receive the best quality care through training, evaluation and keeping up to date with the latest advances in the field.
Mass casualty/disaster management
In the event of a disaster/mass casualty incident, Ullevål both provides emergency care and coordinates the efforts of all the hospitals under the South-Eastern Regional Health Authority.

Research and teaching
- Ullevål is the country's largest teaching hospital, and one of the leading medical research centres in Norway. The hospital trains doctors, nurses, radiographers, nursing assistants and other healthcare professionals.
- In addition to patient-related research conducted by medical departments and laboratories, the hospital operates two dedicated university-based research institutes: the Institute of Experimental Research and the Institute of Medical Genetics.
